Floating Finger Jointed Staircase

This staircase was originally designed by Ray Kappe, an incredibly talented architect and my fathers mentor. These stairs have a very unique construction, each tread and riser are made made with interlocking pieces that create an incredibly rigid structure when glued. The result is a self-supporting floating staircase. Like much of Ray’s work, it derives its beauty from the material itself, rather than attempting to hide the method of construction, it is embraced as an aesthetic benefit. I could not have built these stairs without the help of my father, who assisted throughout this incredibly labor intensive process and helped with the hundreds of glue-ups that went into this project.
